Ah, the week before Valentine’s Day, one of my favorite times of year to listen to the radio. Two reasons for this:
1. I like cheesy love songs and power ballads. I like to be able to hear songs like the one below on a regular basis but not have to admit they are on my iPod. The radio is playing it, so I know I’m not the only one.
2. I know, know within the depths of my soul, that in every “Top Love Songs” countdown and/or love song channel on iTunes or Pandora, there will be songs that are not love songs at all and for some reason I love that. I call this the “Listen to the Words” problem.
Last night, for example, my department hosted a Valentines party for our students. One of the people on my staff had a radio station playing that was suppossed to be all love songs. It played, during the course of the night:
Total Eclipse of the Heart (which has the oh-so-romantic line “Once upon a time I was falling in love, now I’m only falling apart” Sexy!)
I Will Always Love You (NOT a song about a happy couple people! I’ve also seen this on several wedding compilation CD’s, which is just an utter FAIL)
Nothing Compares To You (which is so depressing I can’t even stand it)
and of course “Every Breath You Take” which is a Valentine theme song for all the stalkers out there.
